About GEAR

The GIAA Ensemble Artists Repertory Theater Company, Inc. (GEAR) first met in January 2004. We are a not-for-profit sister group of the Guild of Italian American Actors. GEAR was created specifically for the members of GIAA to increase their acting opportunities in theater and also so they would have the opportunity to work as part of an ensemble group

GEAR fosters an environment where it's members not only get the chance to act but also to write, direct, and work in the pre-production and production phases of theater.

GEAR strives to promote positive images of Italian Americans on stage. We focus on reading and performing plays not just of an Italian theme but also plays written by Italians and Italian-Americans. The group reads and performs both published and original works.

GEAR's Artist in Residence
GEAR is proud to have playwright Mario Fratti as our current Artist in Residence. Mr. Fratti is a professor of Italian literature at Hunter College, as well as an internationally acclaimed playwright and drama critic. Author of such works as Suicide, The Cage, The Return, The Academy, and The Bridge, he is best known for his musical Nine (inspired by Fellini's famous film, 8 1/2) which in its original production in 1982 won the O'Neill Award, the Richard Rodgers Award, two Outer Critics Circle Awards, eight Drama Desk Awards, and five Tony Awards. In its 2003 revival, Nine won three Outer Critics Circle Awards and two Tony Awards. You may visit Mr. Fratti's website at www.mariofratti.com
